The European Diamond Capacity Hub receives a 3-year grant to boost its services
Brussels, Belgium, 17.09.2025
The European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH), a pioneering initiative aimed at advancing Diamond Open Access (OA) publishing across Europe, has received a $500.000, 3-year grant from the Gates Foundation to further develop its services.
The EDCH is pleased to announce that it has received a grant of $500,000 from the Gates Foundation. The 3-year grant, administered by the EDCH’s fiscal host OPERAS, will support the further development and long-term sustainability of the EDCH as well as the creation of a community of practice of Diamond OA publishers, Service Providers, and Technology Providers in Europe.
The Agence Nationale de Recherche and the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique are joined by the Gates Foundation as one of the research funding and performing organisations that are providing substantial funding for the EDCH, whose operations are also supported by the European Commission.
The European Diamond Capacity Hub, which grew out of the EU-funded DIAMAS and CRAFT-OA projects, is a collective providing services for Diamond Open Access publishers, Service Providers, and Tools & Technology Providers. The EDCH aims to support the research community with a thriving, aligned, high-quality, and sustainable OA scholarly communication infrastructure to support equitable scientific publishing.
“We are most grateful for the funding support from the Gates Foundation,” says Lidia Borrell-Damián, Secretary General of Science Europe and Chair of the Steering Committee of the EDCH. “The grant will allow us to boost the services of the EDCH and deploy a full range of activities for the EDCH community in 2026.”
Pierre Mounier and Johan Rooryck, who jointly coordinate the EDCH, also express their delight:
“The EDCH’s scope may be Europe, but the Diamond OA model is of global relevance. This grant is a strong signal that support for Diamond OA can develop further in a collaborative and global effort.”
